Making A Fast Move? Packing Tips That Save Space, Time & Require Fewer Boxes!

Posted on: 9 March 2016

While moving is seldom considered to be fun or relaxing, having adequate time to plan and organize the process can at least make it somewhat less stressful. However, sometimes it becomes necessary to move very quickly without the luxury of pre-planning and organizing all the details. Whether you have just been informed that your company needs you in another city on Monday or a personal situation makes an immediate move necessary, the following tips will help you pack your kitchen and bath quickly and efficiently using only a minimal number of moving boxes.

In the kitchen

The average kitchen probably already has a number of containers that can be used to pack other items in a pinch, as well as a number of items that can be used to cushion breakables, such as paper toweling, dish towels and bags of rice, beans or popcorn. These containers include:

  • waste cans and recycling bins - wash and dry thoroughly, then line with a clean garbage bag and fill with pantry items, canned goods, miscellaneous items and tie the bag securely closed
  • pots, kettles and sauce pans - pack full of pantry items and then tape the lid on securely with painter's tape
  • canisters - empty contents into plastic bags and then fill with flatware, utensils or small spice containers, taping the lid on with painter's tape when filled
  • slow cookers - fill with stacks of bowls or saucers, cushioned with paper towels, or a small bag of rice or beans and then tape the lid securely closed with painter's tape
  • microwave ovens - add stacks of plates, saucers or platters, cushioned with dishtowels, napkins and small bags of rice, etc. to prevent movement and then tape the filled microwave securely closed with painter's tape

In the bath

Packing the contents of your bath can be done quickly by using the hamper, waste basket and trash bags to hold linens, toiletries and grooming appliances. Wash and dry the waste basket and hamper and then line them with clean garbage bags before filling.

Remember to pack liquids and creams inside smaller plastic bags before placing them inside the wastebasket or hamper in order to prevent spills. Good quality trash bags can function well to protect towels, washcloths and bed linens during the move.
